Book Review : Eternal Darkness by J.F. Johns

Wow! Eternal Darkness is surprisingly amazing. I wasn’t expecting that I will end up loving this book. I finished reading this almost a week ago but I’m still not sure how to write a decent review for this so please bear with me. My head is still all over the place!

image1 (2)The world is divided between humans and cyborgs. Scarlet Lock is neither. She is a soldier created to kill on command. But her memory has been erased and when she awakens in a government facility she soon discovers that this new world is a dangerous place, full of government secrets and cruel experiments performed in the name of progress. With the help of a group of cyborgs, Scarlet will fight to uncover the truth and transform the future of the new world she now lives in. x

image2 (1)Let me start with the characters in this book. Both humans and cyborgs, felt very real to me and their development throughout the story is truly remarkable. We get to know a little about the characters with some back-stories the author has included. I have mixed feelings with Scarlet though. She has been through a lot, like most of the characters in this book, but I had quite a hard time to feel sorry for her. Nonetheless, she is likeable and I’m pretty sure that she will become more badass. I admire the friendship between the father-figure Sam, the grumpy Madeleine, the narcissistic Eric (who has been recently added to my book boyfriend list) and the mysterious Curtis (I’m not 100% trusting him). Each of them has their own unique personalities but all together, they make a perfect team. The relationship of Andrew and Cassie are also wonderful.

The concept of this book is not really unique but it is still incredibly impressive. I can’t wait to see more of the other parts of the world the author has created. I like the descriptive and narrative style of her writing too. There were some scenes that others might find unnecessary but I thought they’ve added more depth to the story. I wish there were more actions scenes though. Of course there is romance in this book. I initally thought that it’s just another typical love-triangle but I was wrong. I love how it turned out!

That cliffhanger!!! The gif below best describes my reaction after reading this book.

Just when I thought that everything was going well. Why?! I knew that something big will happen but I had no idea what and when it will happen. I love reading books with cliffhangers but it always depends on how it was executed and I can say that the author did a great job on this one. I can’t wait to know what happens next! Dear Jazmin, please don’t kill anyone from these lovely characters. Please!

Eternal Darkness is an outstanding debut which I highly recommend to everyone! Give this book a chance and you’ll never regret it. Congratulations to Ms. Jazmin for doing an excellent job.
