Ten Books On My TBR I’m Avoiding To Read

TTT is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish
and now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.

Happy Tuesday! Today’s topic is all about the books we own but still unread. Why are we still not picking them up? Why are we avoiding these babies? The books on my list are mostly backlist and I am still planning on reading them (well most of them at least). In no particular order:

And I Darken by Kiersten White – I think I have this book on my shelf for almost 3 years now. I am not even sure why I bought it, to be honest. lol

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin – I bought this because the synopsis sounds really interesting. It’s young adult and historical fiction but with an alternate events. In this book, Hitler has continued to rule the world and a young Jewish girl is going to stop him. I’m still planning on reading this book of course but I’m not sure when.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara – I actually started reading this book more than twice but it didn’t keep me intrigued so I ended up putting it down. Probably it’s still not the right time for me to read it.

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare – I bought the box set because it was on sale and I loved the covers. I was still planning on reading this when I bought the set, but now i’m honestly not sure if I still want to. I saw the author few years ago in a book fair and she kind of gave me a not so good first impression and it really affected my feelings/thoughts about her and towards her books.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – I struggled a lot to get into this book. I also tried the audiobook but I got more confused. I personally don’t read a lot of sci-fi so this one’s on me. I’m still willing to try again though.

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk – This was one of the first books I bought in 2012 when I came here in Germany. I think I bought it because of the movie adaptation which I haven’t watched either. A lot of my friends love this book so I have high expectations and I’m a little scared that I’ll not like it that much.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald – I watched the movie adaptation of this book and I really enjoyed it. But I have a love/hate relationship with classics.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline – I was so excited when I bought this book and when I saw the trailer of the movie adaptation. I think I totally ignored that this book is sci-fi because it’s also a LitRPG. And now i’m quite intimidated by it.

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath – I’m afraid that i’ll end up not liking this book because I really want to love it. I tried reading few chapters but it didn’t really caught my attention so I put it down.

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent – This book is always on my Fall tbr. Every freaking year. But I always end up not reading it. I bought it because it’s one of the all-time favorite books of one of my most trusted bookstagrammers. I think I’m just also worried that I will not love it.

How about you? What books on your TBR that you’re avoiding to read for a very long time now? Which of these books should I prioritize?

Always,

  1. I was also super hesitant about Ready Player One! (It’s actually in my TTT for books out of my comfort zone lol) but it was SOOOO good. Honestly if you watch the movie and you enjoyed it, you most likely will enjoy the book! Also, I did read The Mortal Instruments, or a few of them at least, but I was totally turned off the series after soooo many people talked about her as a person being… Not so great. Plus all that fun plagiarism stuff. I was out after that.

    1. I think i’ll watch Ready Player One first before reading the book. 😁 And wow, I thought i’m the only one who had a not so great experience with her. I was so excited to meet her in the book fair and even carried the whole box set in my backpack so I can have them (or at least one) signed but after what happened, I changed my mind. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have no idea with the plagiarism though.

      1. If you’ve ever heard of the Dark-Hunters series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, there was a TON of drama in the writing world because Cassandra Clare was accused of plagiarizing Shadowhunters off of them (if you haven’t, I high recommend the Dark Hunters series as they’re INCREDIBLE). But yeah I’ve heard she’s fairly off-putting in person as well and those things combined… 🤷🏻‍♀️ I was done haha.

  2. A Little Life and The Bell Jar are ones I’ve been avoiding too! I started The Bell Jar, but I haven’t brought myself to finish it yet because I don’t know if I’m ready for how it ends. I loved Illuminae so much. I definitely get how it can be a struggle if you’re not used to sci-fi though. If you try again I hope you enjoy it 😊

  3. Great list and tag, and I loved reading your thoughts. I do understand that A Little Life is a book to be read in a specific mood. It is very emotionally “heavy”. I was disappointed with Burial Rites, but most people loved it.
