“You look . . . better than before.”
Was that a compliment? I could have sworn Lucien gave Tamlin an encouraging nod.
“And you hair is . . . clean.”

This is our first read for the month of September. I’m on page 143 and it’s getting more and more exciting. Hoping to finish this before the this week ends.

Monthly Recap : August 2015

bye august! bye summer!

Happy September 1st. I can hear christmas bells and smell christmas cookies. Let’s start with some great things that happened in my life last August.

  • I’ll be getting my ID next week. We went to Ausländerbehörde for my residence permit and we’re happy because we didn’t have problems. That also means that I can now work.
  • We’ve started going to a different gym and we love the new ambiance.
  • We bought an action camera! We want to record simple events in our lives.
  • We went to Funeral for A Friend’s gig in MuzikZentrum. It was fun!
  • I updated my book blog! Yey!

I am satisfied because I’ve read more than 4 books (my maximum per month) and I was able to read the books on my TBR List. I think having a reading buddy helps me a lot! Thanks to Joyce.

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

My Thoughts

This was a read-along with my reading buddy Joyce for the month of July.

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetAmerica Singer has no intention in joining The Selection, a contest where 35 girls from different parts of the country compete with each other to win the heart of Prince Maxon and become the princess of Illea. After being „forced“ by her loved ones, she finally joined and was selected together with the other 34 girls.

The book’s cover made me buy it. I had no idea what this book is all about and I thought this is like an „American Idol“ kind of story but it’s not. Maybe because America’s last name is Singer and she sings. The Selection is more like „The Bachelor“. I personally don’t like the idea of the competition (The Bachelor) so I was a little unsure of my feelings towards the story but I’m glad that I still ended up enjoying it.

„Is it better to lose someone slowly, or fast? Is it better to see them fade – knowing you’re helpless to hold on to them and watching them slide into the darkness – or is it easier to have them torn away from you in the night? Easier to say goodbye a hundred times, never knowing for sure which will be the last, or to say goodnight and never speak again? Which hurts the least? I don’t think either of us could tell you.“ – p. 23

On Music : Top Five Favorite Albums of All-Time – Punk / Rock Edition

Aside from reading, I also love listening to music (even while reading). I grew up listening to different kind of music my parents love. My mom listens to Air Supply, The Carpenters, ABBA, and Bee Gees while my father loves The Ramones, The Beatles, and Queen. Of course they also love listening to the songs of Filipino artists (Original Philippine Music) like VST and Company, Juan dela Cruz Band, Asin, Boyfriends, and a lot more. Me? I also listen to what my parents love and through out the years, I’ve discovered new awesome artists and music genres.

I would like to share my Top 5 Favorite (Rock / Punk) Albums of all-time (in no particular order). I will never get tired of listening to these songs.

Riot! by Paramore (2007)980x980-AC0B87F3-964B-462A-A1E90B60337AF426

In 2007 , a friend of mine introduced me to Paramore’s All We Know is Falling album. I instantly fell inlove with their songs and found out that they also released a new album that year. I got my copy and listen to them almost everyday. Two years ago , I watched Paramore live in Hamburg and it was so awesome. I love this band so much. (Some favorite songs from this album : That’s What You Get, When It rains, Hallelujah, Miracle.)

Cinder is back and trying to break out of prison–even though she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive if she does–in this second installment from Marissa Meyer.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother, or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana.

My Thoughts

At first, I thought that this book will focus with the new characters and will only include some parts of Cinder’s story. I was wrong.

The sequel of Cinder, Scarlet is a modern retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. It introduces us to Scarlet Benoit who is living in a small town in France. Her grandmother is missing and Scarlet don’t have any idea what, how or why it happened. She meet a mysterious street fighter named Wolf and teams up with him to find her grandmother. Meanwhile, in New Beijing, Cinder is trying to break out of the prison when she accidentally meet another prisoner named Carswell Thorne. Both Scarlet and Cinder have their own mission and questions that need some answers.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 presetI preferred this sequel to the first book becasue this has so much exciting things going on, the plot twists are quite unexpected and there are additional interesting characters.

Scarlet is determined, a bit naive but also a badass like Cinder. For me, Cinder is more mature than Scarlet because she went through a lot of things in her life. I can say that I like Cinder more than her. Wolf is a strong and silent type which made me like him. He is a bit complex and I hated him once but it changed quickly. Me and Joyce are currently fangirling over him. Thorne, or should I say Captain Thorne, is the complete opposite of Wolf. He’s cute, funny and hilarious. I like the chemistry between him and Cinder and their conversations are fun to read. Iko is back and even though we don’t see (or hear) much of her sassiness, it still made me feel happy. I almost forgot Kai. In my review of Cinder, I’ve mentioned that I wasn’t sure with how I feel about him. In this book, we get to know him better. I can say that he is a great leader and loyal person and I totally disagree with his final decision. I think romance is not the major thing on the story but I’m still rooting for Cinder and Kai.

Day 2 of 3 Days 3 Quotes Challenge

My quote for today is from All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. This is one of my favorite reads for this year. This book broke my heart. Theodore Finch is an interesting character because of his unique personality and this is one of my favorite lines from him.

“You have to live your life like you’ll never be sorry. It’s easier just to do the right thing from the start so there’s nothing to apologize for.”

I think I will not tag a specific blogger so feel free to do this challenge. Check out my Day 1 of 3 Days 3 Quotes Challenge.

FRIDAY FINDS showcases the books you ‘found’ and added to your To Be Read (TBR) list… whether you found them online, or in a bookstore, or in the library — wherever! (they aren’t necessarily books you purchased). Hosted by teh awesome Jenn of A Daily Rhythm.

I’ve been seeing these books lately especially after the released of the second book, The Heart of Betrayal,  last month. The feedbacks and reviews are all great so I’ve decided to add these on my ever-growing TBR list.

Day 1 of 3 Days 3 Quotes Challenge

How are you guys doing? I hope you’re having a great day and if not, let me remind you that tomorrow is Friday! Friday makes me happy even I’m not really working.

Three days ago, I was nominated (on my old blog) by Valeria to do the „3 Days 3 Quotes Challenge“. Thank you Val for the nomination!

The rules are simple

Thank the person who nominated you.
Post one quote each day for 3 days (it can be anybody’s quote, even yours. Make sure you credit it properly), and lastly,
Tag 3 different bloggers everyday.

Let’s do this!

My first quote is from Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood.

“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”

Murakami is one of my favorite authors and this quote is one of my favorites. For me, these lines tell us to explore more books (or genres) and read not only the „hyped“ ones but also those books written by indie and not famous authors.
